Bus operators are being encouraged to attend a seminar about special event planning next month, which will include people’s experiences planning transport for Summer Olympic Games and the Rugby World Cup.

The Master Class on Special Event Planning is being held by UITP in conjunction with UITPANZ in November.

UITP Australia New Zealand Executive Director Rob Pearce says the event will be an important learning opportunity for bus operators.

"It’s just about how we plan for and deliver special event services and public transport doing major events," he says.

"It’s really just bringing operators and industry together to identify best practice principals and special event service delivery.

"It’s important for them to learn from past experience and also identify how things can be done but for future."

Pearce says the forum is also an opportunity to understand how to run special services without disrupting everyday services.

He says the event will involve a range of speakers, including Professor Graham Currie, Monash University, and Auckland Transport Special Events Manager John Strawbridge.

Currie has been a transport planning advisor for Summer Olympic Games host cites since 2006 and Strawbridge was involved in organising the Rugby World Cup.

So far, about 40 registrations have been received although more are expected.

The event will be held on the Gold Coast on November 14 from 9.15am. For more information please contact Tristan Miles on 07 3338 4260 or at anz.uitp@uitp.org
