The title of Minister for Transport has been dropped in a back to basics government, as announced by Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Canberra today.

Leader of the Nationals Warren Truss has been named Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development.

MP Jamie Briggs was also named as Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development.

Truss was chosen as the Leader of The Nationals in 2007, and previously held the position of Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport.

There is no Minister for Transport in Abbott’s cabinet announcement, although transport will still fall under the same portfolio, according to a spokesperson in Truss’ office.

"The simplification of ministerial and departmental titles reflects my determination to run a ‘back to basics’ government," says Abbott.

"The Australian people expect a government that is upfront, speaks plainly and does the essentials well."

The cabinet is expected to be sworn in on Wednesday.
