Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is a step closer to getting a new bus terminal
after construction began late last week.
The first sod was turned for the terminal at Maroochydore on Friday.
Sunshine Coast Council Transport Strategy Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski says the new bus station will allow public transport to grow to meet expected demand.
Baberowski says the new bus station is part of a program to improve sustainable transport options on the Sunshine Coast.
“The Maroochydore bus station will provide better access to services for passengers, improve timetable reliability for all buses servicing the area and provide capacity for future public transport growth,” Baberowski says.
Baberowski hopes improved services and safe, high-quality waiting facilities will encourage more people to use public transport and reduce congestion in Maroochydore.
Sunshine Coast Councillor Jason O’Pray says council contribution to the streetscaping and landscape design
will ensure the new station adds to the coastal look and feel of Maroochydore.
“The high quality urban design will continue the theme already on Cornmeal Creek and Cliff Butt Promenade to create a pleasant arrival for workers, shoppers and visitors,” O’Pray says.
“When it’s finished and the public art pieces and mature trees are in place, this project will reinforce Maroochydore’s reputation as a modern and vibrant business hub.”
The existing bus station will remain operational until the new bus platforms are opened towards the end of construction in October 2013.
The State Government funded majority of the project with a contribution from council.
