‘Busway day’ Saturday

Saturday is ‘busway day’ with hundreds expected at a walk-through of Brisbane's latest infrastructure showcase

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, pictured, will officially open Brisbane’s newest busway between inner-northern suburbs Windsor and Kedron this weekend.

A large crowd is expected at the public open day.

Mostly sunny weather with a 21C maximum is forecast for the opening, allowing Brisbane residents to leave the brollies at home and head for the recently constructed Lutwyche busway station to the heart of tomorrow morning’s event.

Premier Newman accompanied by Transport Minister Scott Emerson will open the busway at around 10am tomorrow, Saturday June 16, at the Lutwyche station.

The public will get their one and only chance to walk the busway between 10am and 2pm, before buses start using the busway on Monday.

“This new busway means more bus services and reliable travel times for northside commuters, regardless of the traffic conditions on Gympie Road and Lutwyche Road,” Newman says.

“Rapid growth in the northern suburbs places huge demand on our transport network and the Northern Busway will help manage this growth.”

Newman says the three kilometre stretch of busway carries the same number of people as nine lanes of traffic on Gympie Road.

Queensland Transport Minister Scott Emerson says the new busway would encourage more people to use public transport with buses running every three minutes during peak time.

“With more than 2,000 weekly bus trips added across northern Brisbane, passengers will be able to just turn up and go on frequent services that skip road congestion,” Emerson says.

“From Monday early morning and late at night buses will be so frequent that the thousands of people who will use the new Lutwyche and Kedron Brook busway stations can throw away their timetables,” he says.

Public entry is via the Lutwyche busway station or the Kedron Brook busway station.

Food and drinks will be on sale at the site on Saturday.

TransLink staff will also be on site to talk with commuters about new bus services starting next week.
