The popularity of a new iPhone app that allows bus passengers to plan their journeys has caused technical issues for Public Transport Victoria.

Transport Victoria released
its PTV iPhone app last week,
allowing commuters to plan journeys with interactive maps and real-time bus information.

But the app was so popular on its
release day that a surge of downloads caused server malfunctions for the transport authority.

"This put a huge amount of pressure on the server and as result many people experienced technical difficulties accessing travel information," Transport Victoria says.

Transport Victoria says it is currently working on the technical issues.

The new app allows commuters to save their favourite stops and stations and view service alterations.

It also allows them to track
travel on a GPS map.

Transport Victoria says the app's features provide an improved gateway to Victoria's public transport network, and will continue to be developed.

"We will use feedback received from users of the app to help build on its current features."

The app is free to download from the iTunes Store.
