A transport survey has shown country Victoria bus drivers are punching well above their weight to satisfy customers, according to Victoria Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder.

Mulder announced yesterday that the highest overall passenger satisfaction among cities surveyed in the third annual Department of Transport 2011 survey was in Shepparton, Wodonga and Wangaratta, with an overall index score of 84.7.

"The many pleasant bus drivers who assist so many travellers should take a bow," Mulder says.

Passengers also rated buses highly at Ballarat at 81.0, Bendigo at 80.2 and Geelong at 76.9 for overall passenger satisfaction.

"In every surveyed provincial city, overall passenger satisfaction was above the level for Melbourne's buses, which remains quite high at a respectable index score of 74.5," Mulder says.

"It was particularly pleasing that the survey of 1,500 bus users across country Victorian cities found satisfaction with the design and comfort levels of buses high in Geelong at 82.6 index points, 83.8 in Ballarat, 83.0 in the Latrobe Valley and an outstanding 87.7 index points in Shepparton, Wangaratta and Wodonga."

Mulder says good value town bus fares received a tick from bus users, with an index score between 90.0 at Shepparton, Wodonga and Wangaratta and 84.4 in Geelong, which was more than 10 index points above the comparable survey figure for Melbourne at 72.2 index points.

"The primary driver of passenger satisfaction, the actual running of bus trips was given a fairly consistent, good 76.7 to 79.7 index point rating in each of the four largest centres, Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Latrobe Valley," he says.

Bus stops and the provision of information received scores between 72.8 and 77.5 index points.

Bus users' personal security was given a index
score of
more than
80 in all cities surveyed except Ballarat, with the latter having an index score of 77.7.
