NTC issues Easter road safety message

NTC CEO Nick Dimopoulos urges drivers to take it easy over the Easter holiday period

April 14, 2011

The National Transport Commission is urging drivers to play it safe over the Easter holiday period, issuing tips to reduce incidents.

NTC CEO Nick Dimopoulos says drivers need to plan in advance and consider alternatives to get home safely for Easter and make sure their vehicles are serviced and in a driveable condition.

Warning that fatigue is a big killer on the road, Dimopoulos says drivers should take a break every two hours or when they feel tired.

“The biggest killers on our roads are speed, fatigue and drink driving. Stick to speed limits, avoid driving fatigued and avoid driving under the influence,” he says.

The NTC says motorists need to familiarise themselves with road conditions and ensure they have enough room when attempting to overtake other vehicles, especially heavy vehicles and caravans.
