Brisbane bus hub project goes ahead

The Queensland floods haven’t dampened the enthusiasm for a proposed Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at a Brisbane suburb connecting the eastern busway project

Expressions of interest from private developers to construct a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at an established eastern Brisbane suburb opened late January, seemingly unaffected by flood funding cutbacks.

Once a thriving strip shopping precinct, suburban Coorparoo Junction has become tired and underused, but is perfectly positioned as a transport hub six kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD and aligned with the Eastern busway project.

Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchliffe says he wants the Coorparoo Junction TOD become a landmark development in Brisbane.

“Once developed, the site will boast residential housing, as well as commercial space to support a vibrant retail precinct – and the whole site is to be integrated with the planned Coorparoo Junction busway station,” he says.

“Importantly, this vibrant hub will stimulate the local economy, build investor confidence and bring a much-needed facelift to the site.”

Hinchliffe says the development will deliver on Brisbane City Council’s plans for the Eastern Corridor.

Member for Greenslopes Cameron Dick says seeking expressions of interest was a significant step in the revitalisation of the Coorparoo Junction precinct.

“The Junction has always been an important commercial hub and this next stage will allow it to recapture its former glory,” Dick says.

“The site will be an integrated development, allowing people to choose to live and work close to facilities and services, as well as reducing their reliance on car travel.”

Expressions of interest are expected from companies and consortia with experience in the construction, design and development of large-scale infrastructure and mixed-use developments.

The 1.25ha Coorparoo Junction TOD site is located on the corner of Old Cleveland Road and Cavendish Road at Coorparoo.

Expressions of interest close on Friday, 18 March 2011.
