Australia’s unemployment rate hit 5.4 percent in April despite a solid rise in full-time jobs, according to new data out today by the ABS.
This is in line with the unemployment rate for March, which was today revised upward from 5.3 to 5.4 percent (seasonally adjusted).
The ABS reported the number of people employed increased by 33,700 people to 11.025 million last month.
This was driven by a rise in full-time employment, up 37,500 people to 7.736 million, which was offset by a fall in part-time employment, down 3,900 people to 3.290 million.
Meanwhile, the number of people unemployed increased in April, up 6,500 people to 628,100.
Queensland also saw a rise in the unemployment rate, up from 5.5 percent in March to 5.6 percent in April.
The ABS seasonally adjusted monthly aggregate hours worked series showed a fall in April, down 8.3 million hours to 1,531.4 million hours.
The participation rate in April was 65.2 percent.
