NSW starts work on bus priority project

An upgrade to provide southbound and northbound bus lanes in Pittwater Road, Narrabeen, on the approach to the Wakehurst Parkway

An upgrade to provide southbound and northbound bus lanes in Pittwater Road, Narrabeen, on the approach to the Wakehurst Parkway intersection, is about to start.

This project is part of a NSW Government initiative to develop 43 strategic bus corridors across the Sydney metropolitan area and get commuters to their destinations sooner.

Road work is scheduled to start on the section of Pittwater Road between Wakehurst Parkway and Garden Street on Wednesday, January 20, weather permitting.

The project will improve the efficiency and reliability of bus services and improve pedestrian and cycling safety when it is completed in late 2010.

Road work will generally be carried out Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. Some night work may be required and directly affected residents and businesses will be informed in advance.

The RTA is asking motorists to be aware of the changed traffic conditions, obey any reduced speed limits and follow directions of traffic controllers.

As a result of community input, the main work has been adjusted to include:

  • Relocation of a water main and construction of a retaining wall at the corner of Pittwater Road and Gondola Road
  • Minor road widening on Pittwater Road northbound from Gondola Road to 40 metres north of Nareen Parade and on the northern side of Gondola Road for 40 metres up to the Pittwater Road intersection
  • Construction of a southbound red bus lane extending from the bus stop south of the Garden Street intersection to about 50 metres before the bridge over Narrabeen Lagoon
  • Construction of a northbound red bus lane on the approach to the Wakehurst Parkway intersection
  • Installation of traffic lights and pedestrian crossings at the Gondola Road intersection
  • Adjustments to traffic lights at the intersection of Wakehurst Parkway and Pittwater Road to include new pedestrian/cyclist crossings
  • Adjustments to parking spaces near the Pittwater Road/Gondola Street intersection.

Every effort will be made to minimise impacts on residents and businesses.
