Jonathan Metcalfe has been appointed Chief Executive of Veolia Transport Australasia (VTA), replacing Hans Baunsoe, who is returning to Europe after five years in Australasia.

Metcalfe took up the post of full time Chairman of Connex Melbourne in January 2008 having relocated to Melbourne from the U.K. with his wife and two teenage children.

Prior to this he was Chief Executive of Great North Eastern Railway, the high speed long distance railway connecting London and Scotland along the East coast of the United Kingdom.

Metcalfe says he aims to transform Veolia Transport into Australasia’s acknowledged leader in managing mobility solutions.

“This is a critical juncture in VTA’s development,” he says. “There are many challenges and some terrific opportunities as governments invest record funds into public transport,.

“We are committed to growing Veolia Transport’s presence in Australasia through acquisitions, organic growth and new business activities.”

More than 56 million passenger journeys a year are made in Australia and New Zealand on VTA’s train, bus, light rail and monorail operations.

In partnership with local governments, public authorities and private companies, VTA delivers services in Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and the South West region of Western Australia.
