Brisbane’s $1.88 billion new duplicated Gateway Bridge will meet in the middle next month, marking a milestone for the country’s biggest road project.
Standing 64 metres above the Brisbane River and spanning 1.63 km, the second up-river crossing is expected to be used by 50,000 vehicles a day when it opens mid-next year.
Premier Anna Blight and Deputy Paul Lucas shook hands over the gap at a ceremony this week.
“When the bridge first opened in 1986, it saw 12,500 vehicles per day, which increased to 17,000 a day after its first year. Now 100,000 vehicles travel across the bridge each day,” Lucas says.
“This project is ahead of schedule, with completion of the bridge due by mid-2010.
“When it opens to traffic next year, it will connect with the new 7km section of Gateway Motorway north of the Brisbane River, completed in July this year, and the 12km Gateway Motorway upgrade south of the river which is due for completion early next year,” he says.
