A Veolia chartered bus carrying 36 students from Sutherland Shire Christian College has been involved in an accident in which one person was killed.

The bus was involved in a head-on collision with a car at about 7.50am today (Friday, September 11) on Heathcote Road, near Illawarra Road, in Lucas Heights, police say.

The male driver of the car is dead. The female passenger was freed just after 8.30am and has been airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical and unstable condition.

It is understood the female driver of the bus was taken to St George Hospital with minor injuries.

Up to five children have also been taken to hospital suffering from shock, cuts and abrasions, however their injuries are not considered life threatening.

The remaining students on board the bus are being assessed at the scene by paramedics. A bus is en route to the scene to pick up the remaining children and they will be taken directly to the school.

It is understood the silver-coloured hatchback had been travelling eastbound when it collided head-on with the west-bound bus.

Emergency services are continuing to work at the scene, with police to conduct inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
