Unemployment stabilises at 5.8 percent

Australia’s unemployment rate remained steady at 5.8 percent in July, while Queensland’s jobless rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to be on par with national levels.

Australia Bureau of Statistics figures released today show 16,000 full-time jobs were axed last month.

Full-time employment fell to 7.6 million, while part-time employment increased by 48,200 to 3.2 million.

Unemployment has increased by 800 to 664,100, with the number of people looking for full-time work decreasing by 4,800 to almost 500,000.

Meanwhile, the number of people seeking part-time work increased by 5,600 to 168,200.

The male unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage point to 6.2 percent, while the female unemployment rate decreased 0.1 percentage point to 5.3 percent.

In terms of participation, the rate increased 0.1 percentage point to 65.3 percent.
