Operators seeking funding for school bus seatbelts have until Tuesday next week (July 14) to submit an application to the Federal Government.

The Seatbelts for Kids funding program Round 4 application process is available to bus operators to provide seatbelts for school students travelling on buses in rural and regional areas in Australia.

A subsidy of up to $25,000 per bus is available to bus operators contracted with state and territory governments to provide school bus services.

Funding of $8.4 million is available for allocation in 2009-10 and further funding rounds are likely to be conducted throughout the year.

The program was established to increase the number of school buses equipped with seatbelts used on rural and regional routes, particularly those used over routes which may be hazardous or involve high speeds.

Since the program commenced funding has been provided for fitting of seatbelts to 74 school buses throughout Australia.

The subsidy is available for eligible school buses to fit lap/sash seatbelts and perform any other associated engineering work including wheelchair restraint systems.

Further details on the program, including application forms and eligibility criteria, can be found at: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/safety/seatbeltsforkids/

Bus operators can also contact the Seatbelts for Kids hotline on 1300 725 209. Applications for funding under Round 4 of the program will close on Tuesday 14 July 2009.
