Average diesel prices fell for the first time in weeks for the week ended July 5 by a national average of 1.3 cents per litre, according to terminal gate pricing data from the Australian Institute of Petroleum.
The AIP data is based on information provided by BP Australia, Caltex, Shell Australia and ExxonMobil.
Prices in all states excluding Darwin and Perth remained below the $1.18 per litre mark throughout the week, defying a trend which has seen prices on the rise over the last few weeks.
Melbourne’s diesel continued to be the cheapest in the country, averaging 117.1 cents a litre for the week.
The single cent rise since last week is still slightly cheaper than Brisbane and Sydney, where the average price at the pumps was 117.3 cents a litre.
There appeared to be no sign of the drastic rise many people were anticipating in Queensland after Premier Anna Bligh scrapped the 8.35 cent fuel subsidy on July 1.
Diesel in Adelaide was slightly more expensive, finishing the week with an average of 117.6 cents per litre, down a whole cent from the previous week.
Darwin topped the list with an average diesel price of 121.6 cents per litre, 3.2 cents higher than Perth which finished as the second most expensive city at 118.4 cents a litre.
