Bus patronage in Adelaide has risen by almost 1 million trips over the past year, despite an unprecedented heatwave hitting the city in summer.

Figures from the South Australian Transport Department show around 999,000 extra bus trips were recorded between the 2007-08 and 2008-09.

Overall public transport use, across bus, train and tram services, has increased from 60.635 million trips in the first 11 months of 2007-08 to 61.816 million in the same period last year.

The closure of the Belair railway line for upgrades in April and May 2009 pushed a significant number of rail users onto the bus system, the figures show.
