One of the Blue Mountains’ most recognisable tourist attractions is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month.

The Blue Mountains Trolley Tours were established by the Blue Mountains Bus Company in 1999 as an all day sightseeing service for visitors to the region.

Managing Director Karim Hussain says the original three trolleys bought by the company were produced in Western Australia and were based on a Mitsubishi truck chassis with a traditional trolley tram-style body.

The popularity of the service grew and after a few years the 25-seater vehicle could not accommodate the demand.

“We found we were getting standing loads after a few years of operating them,” Hussain says.

The company found two similar vehicles – built on truck chassis with replica bodies – in Brisbane.

The new 38-seater trolley vehicles work in tandem with the smaller trolleys, as demand dictates.

Over the past ten years the company has grown to include a visitor centre in Katoomba, a daily Jenolan Caves coach tour and VIP tours in addition to the trolley tours.

The company has been carbon neutral since January 2008.
