Queensland to get smart licence by 2010

It has been on the cards for over six years, but it appears Queensland drivers will have a new ‘smartcard’

It has been on the cards for over six years, but it appears Queensland drivers will have a new ‘smartcard’ licence by the middle of next year.

The State’s peak trucking representative body says Queensland Transport intends on introducing the credit card-sized licence to become the only form of driver documentation by June 2010.

Rather than displaying a driver’s address and details, the Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) says the new card will have a microchip capable of storing all the relevant information.

The initial scheme, which was proposed by the former Beattie Government in 2003, had planned to have the licences in place by 2006.

The decision to opt for a new licensing system is based on an increase in identity fraud, which cost Australia more than $1 billion last financial year.

The cards will be released progressively over a six-month period.
