Entries for the New South Wales 2009 WorkCover Safe Work Awards are now open.

In 2008, family-owned Albury Company, Joss Group, won the Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System for the implementation of a comprehensive, integrated system to manage workplace injuries and reduce time away from work.

Also that year, The Dorsal Boutique Hotel in Forster took out the Best Solution to Workplace safety category by developing a bed lifting system, which is a frame that allows housemaids to make beds standing up eliminating the need for bending, stretching and dragging heavy beds and reducing workplace injuries.

Last year’s awards attracted a record 121 entries.

Employers and workers can enter a specific project or group of initiatives that have improved safety in a workplace, such as enhancements to equipment, a new work process or improved communication strategies.

Entries can address any safety issue specific to an individual workplace, or can be an initiative that can be used by other businesses.

The winners will be announced at a gala awards dinner at Rosehill Gardens, Grand Pavilion on 28 October 2009.

Winning entries from the WorkCover NSW 2009 SafeWork Awards are automatically submitted into the National Safety Awards held in Canberra in early 2010.

Nominations for the 2009 Awards will close at 5pm on Monday 25 May.

Employers and workers are invited to submit written entries in the following four categories:

  • Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System (public, private & not for profit)
  • Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue
  • Best Workplace Health and Safety Practices in Small Business
  • Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety
