If you catch public transport to this Friday's NAB Cup bushfire appeal game between the Western Bulldogs and Essendon at Telstra Dome, the cost of public transport will be included in your NAB Cup event ticket.

All footy fans who pre-purchase a ticket to the NAB Cup clash and carry it as proof of purchase can travel to and from the match on metropolitan trains, trams and buses and V/Line trains and coaches for free and will not require a valid Metcard or V/Line ticket.

To make sure you are entitled to free travel, buy your ticket online at Ticketmaster and print out your ticket and carry it with you. Alternatively, buy your ticket to the match from a Ticketmaster outlet.

Metlink chief executive Bernie Carolan says free travel was a thank you to people attending the match and supporting the fundraising effort.

"We want to do whatever we can to help families through this terrible hardship and through the challenging time ahead as they rebuild their homes and communities," he says.

"Public transport operators and the bus industry are very close to the communities impacted by the fires. Many of our staff live in these areas and many are close to the grief and the loss being experienced, so we want to do what we can to help those affected."

Additional metropolitan and regional trains will run to and from the game.

All proceeds from the match will be donated to the Victorian Government's Bushfire Appeal Fund.
