WA: Nightrider bus service to stay through busy holiday season

Transport Minister Simon O’Brien has guaranteed Perth’s Nightrider bus, which transports revellers home from Northbridge, would continue until the end

Transport Minister Simon O’Brien has guaranteed Perth’s Nightrider bus, which transports revellers home from Northbridge, would continue until the end of summer.

The service, which operates between 1am and 4am on Sundays, had been in danger of folding next month if the Perth City Council voted to withdraw its share of funding.

O’Brien says he has instructed the Public Transport Authority to ensure the buses continued through the summer holiday season.

The Nightrider bus is an important part of the public transport mix over the Christmas period,” he says.

“Although not as popular as Fremantle’s Nightrider bus, the service still transports hundreds of people home safely from parties and functions in Northbridge for a flat $5 fee.”

The Minister says he will review the service’s long-term future after examining patron levels between now and February.

“I acknowledge the support of Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi on this issue and will seek to talk to her about Perth City Council maintaining its partnership with the State Government on this initiative,” he says.

“I would also encourage people who haven’t yet used the Nightrider bus to give it a go.”
