At its meeting on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, the City of Melbourne administration and tour bus operators prepared and presented a business case to Federation Square management, proposing tour bus parking facilities be relocated to the extension of Russell Street.

City of Melbourne CEO Kathy Alexander says Swanston Street tour bus operators are now finalising the details of an agreement with Federation Square Pty Ltd that will see services relocated to Federation Square.

"We are very pleased Federation Square has supported this relocation," says Alexander.

"Council's decision to pursue the Federation Square location was wise given the benefits of the site, however the targeted relocation date of November 24 will not be achieved due to the period of time required for the negotiations and for infrastructure works to be completed."

Alexander say the Council supported the move to Federation Square as its preferred option for the relocation of buses from Swanston Street, and negotiations are continuing between bus operators and Federation Square to reach an agreement over the next few weeks.

"The Federation Square site was favoured by Council and fully supported by the tour bus companies because of its close links to Flinders Street Station, its safety level and because it provides the best amenity and ready access for tourists to events, cafes and restaurants at Federation Square and to Melbourne’s world-class tourist attractions," she says.

"As soon as an agreement is finalised between the parties, the City of Melbourne will undertake a series of traffic alterations and infrastructure works in Flinders Street adjacent to Federation Square, to ensure the area has the necessary bus parking facilities."
