Thiess group short-listed for Melbourne train refranchise

The Thiess Group, one of Australia’s leading contractors, has been short-listed to tender for Melbourne’s next train franchise with partners

The Thiess Group, one of Australia’s leading contractors, has been short-listed to tender for Melbourne’s next train franchise with partners Veolia/Connex and Bombardier.

If successful, Thiess and Thiess Services will provide infrastructure maintenance and project delivery, drawing on solid experience in rail project delivery and infrastructure maintenance on projects like the $115 million Craigieburn Rail Extension Project, $44 million Sydenham Electrification and $200 million Regional Fast Rail Project.

Thiess Acting General Manager Tony Damiani says the consortium’s proposal reflected the world-class capability of its partners in rail operations, infrastructure maintenance and rolling stock maintenance.

“Melbourne’s train network is one of the biggest metropolitan networks in the world, accommodating more than 3.4 million customer journeys on more than 12,000 services per week, across 15 lines,” Damiani says.

“Over the past nine years, in the face of increasing demand, Connex has continued to deliver high quality public transport and we are extremely proud to be part of their team.”

“Connex, Thiess, Thiess Services and Bombardier share a strong passion for Melbourne, the ongoing improvement of its rail transport and an improved customer experience.”

The tender process is expected to be complete in mid-2009.
