EDITORIAL: Reversing made easy

Technology is changing everything…always. It is the one constant that sets us apart from other animals — creating things that make our lives easier.

Technology will be the key to improving environmental and safety standards in the transport industry.

Not only can we be kind to the environment, soon we can make the job of driving so much easier.

Recently I was able to take out a new Volkswagen Tiguan SUV…not exactly a bus but the technology available, for a relatively small cost, got me thinking about how it could benefit bus and coach drivers.

The Tiguan has a new technology, a Park Steering Assistant. Although not a unique feature, a Lexus model has a similar technology, a technology that has broader benefits.

The optional Park Assist function enables automatic reversing into a parking space parallel to the road.

The driver just controls the accelerator pedal, brake and clutch while the Tiguan steers into a pre-measured space under sensor control.

As soon as the driver manually intervenes in the steering process, the Park Assist function is de-activated.

Yep…a car that parallel parks for you.

Looking at it in a broader context similar technology could be used on buses to alert the driver of obstacles on the side, or behind, that may be in a blind spot.

The technology could be used to detect school children around a bus, especially if it is combined with a reversing camera.

Embracing new technology, especially to benefit the environment or safety, should be our priority in making life easier for our drivers and safer for our children.
