ABC online reports Tasmanian bus operator Metro is buying new 'greener' diesel buses to reduce exhaust emissions.

The first of 12 Euro-5 buses will arrive in the state in August and September.

Metro says the diesel engines are as clean as a gas engine.

Chief executive, Tony Sim, says Metro will be one of the first operators in Australia to operate the buses.

"They're much cleaner in their emissions of nox and carbon monoxide and all those regulated exhaust emissions," he says.

"Gas historically has been a lot cleaner that diesel in the last ten years and now Euro-5 EEV diesel engines are available to us we can say we've got buses that are as clean as gas buses coming into our service."

Sim says they have not worked out a roll-out schedule yet, but they want to make the most of the greener technology in the Euro 5 engines.
