The National Transport Commission (NTC) has confirmed that Transport Ministers have appointed Michael Deegan, Professor Ian Johnston, Greg Martin, Julie-Anne

The National Transport Commission (NTC) has confirmed that Transport Ministers have appointed Michael Deegan, Professor Ian Johnston, Greg Martin, Julie-Anne Schafer and Bill Noonan as Commissioners of the National Transport Commission (NTC).

Deegan will continue in his role as Chairman, with Martin appointed as Deputy Chairman.

The Chairman says the new Commissioners will play an important role in driving the NTC’s strategic direction and in providing support for the National Transport Policy and Plan.

“The Commissioners are joining the NTC at an exciting time for national transport reform and cooperative federalism,” Deegan says.

“Australia’s Transport Ministers are leading a co-ordinated national response to the significant challenge of moving people and freight safely and efficiently while the transport task grows.”

Martin is currently the Professor of Planning and Transport Studies at Curtin University of Technology and Executive Director, Planning and Transport Research Centre of Western Australia (WA). He was formerly the Director General, Department for Planning and Infrastructure and Commissioner of Main Roads in WA.

Shafer, an experienced lawyer, has been a director of a number of organisations and is currently the President of the Royal Automobile Association of Queensland (RACQ).

Noonan is the Branch Secretary of Transport Workers Union Victoria/Tasmania, Chair of the Transport Industry Safety Group and board member of the TWU Super Fund, Institute for Breathing and Sleep, and Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Johnston brings 30 years’ experience in the transport safety field to the NTC, including roles as Director of Monash University Accident Research Centre, Managing Director of ARRB Transport Research and Director – Road Safety for the Victorian Government.

Deegan expressed his thanks to outgoing Commissioners Des Powell and Dr Fred Affleck.

“Des and Fred have made an enormous contribution to the NTC and the transport industry. Their hard work and commitment to national transport reform has been commendable,” he says.
