Work is to begin in August on the construction of the $564 million Northern Expressway in South Australia.
The announcement came as the Federal and South Australian governments awarded construction companies York Civil and Fulton Hogan with tenders for the project.
The companies will construct a fly-over interchange with Port Wakefield Road and a new interchange at Penfield.
The fly-over interchange will stretch 23 km, with the four lane, two-way road linking the Sturt Highway at the Gawler Bypass with Prot Wakefield Road north of Waterloo Corner Road.
According to Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Anthony Albanese, the project will be a win for business because it will slash travel times between key delivery areas.
“It will be a huge boost to the South Australian economy and will cut up to 15 minutes off a trip from Gawler to the Port of Adelaide,” he says.
“That means products can be moved more cheaply and downward pressure is put on inflation.”
Albanese says the multi-million dollar project is one part of the Rudd Government’s $1.1 billion investment in improving and expanding South Australia’s transport network.
He adds the $60 million announced in the May 13 federal Budget to bring the project forward will mean it will be completed by 2010.
The Northern Expressway project is a joint initiative of the Australian and South Australian governments under the AusLink program.
