Rapid population expansion in Sydney’s north-west has seen the Hills area grow exponentially.
Indeed, for the past three years, patronage for bus operator HillsBus has been growing an average 17 percent — each year — on the M2 city services.

Keith McArtney, Group Chief Engineer and Fleet Manager for ComfortDelGro Cabcharge, which operates HillsBus, says they carry close to 14,000 passengers a day, just on the M2 services alone. With patronage continuing to grow, McArtney is keen to run buses that seat more passengers than the average 56.

But he doesn’t believe the answer lies in articulated vehicles — rather in double-deck buses.

That’s why earlier this year, HillsBus, NSW’s largest private bus operator, began discussions with Volgren Australia on designing a double-decker to operate on its M2 city services.
