Victorian Premier John Brumby today declared war on obesity after receiving data showing more than three-quarters of adults and a third of children in Victoria could be overweight or obese by 2025, no doubt these figures would be repeated and reflected across the rest of Australia.

This data, amongst all, should be taken to the National Transport Commission (NTC) to lobby for buses with an upped rating from 16 to 18 tonnes.

For god’s sake bureaucrats think of the wheels, think of the axles…think of the safety issues!

The evidence is there, society is becoming bigger as well as larger.

As the obesity epidemic looms, and threatens to be a burden on the health system, it is up to us to find a solution.

Call me biased, and I know I preach public transport is the congestion buster and productivity champion, but public transport can also encourage walking, an activity limited by private vehicles.

Walking is healthy, it is a great source of physical activity, it is environmentally friendly, and used in conjunction with a balanced diet, it can have weight loss benefits.

The only downsize, sorry Freudian slip, downside is for those people living next to a bus stop, you’ll have to start using the next bus stop along to get your exercise!
