Can do promises 500 more buses for Brisbane

Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has pledged to up the ante in tackling traffic congestion by putting another 500 new

Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has pledged to up the ante in tackling traffic congestion by putting another 500 new buses on Brisbane roads in four years – if he can get a ‘can do’ team behind him to make it happen.

Newman today announced that he would buy or build 120 buses in the first year alone.

He also vows to build another two massive bus depots to fuel and house the new buses during the next term, in addition to the $60 million depot currently underway.

Newman points out his so-called “Brisbane 500” bus plan was only possible because he had put in place the bus infrastructure and forward planning to make it happen during this term.

“In 2004 I promised to put 240 buses on the road in four years but I actually put 330 brand new rigid buses on our roads – 40 percent more than I promised — and it could have been more if I did not have a Labor public transport chair working against me,” he claims.
