The Australian bus and coach industry is in mourning this week following the unexpected passing of veteran Jim Hill.
Hill spent more than half a century running buses up and down Australia’s east coast, specifically in New South Wales and Queensland through Gatton Bus Service.
Hill’s involvement in the bus industry spanned all the way back to his grandmother, who first applied for licences to run buses out of Wollongong in the years prior to World War I.
Following an apprenticeship that took him to English vehicle manufacturer Leyland Motors, Hill returned to Australia and then moved from NSW to Queensland to buy and lead Gatton Bus Service.
“It’s a great industry and it’s given me a good life over the past 55 years or so,” Hill said in an ABC interview last year.
“There are a terrific bunch of people in the industry and I’m sure it’ll continue staying strong and performing well.”
The Queensland Bus Industry Council (QBIC) put out a message to members yesterday mourning the loss of Hill and recognising him for the presence he had in the local bus industry.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of one of our esteemed members, Jim Hill,” the QBIC message says.
“Jim was an integral part of our industry and association for decades and contributed immensely to the local Gatton community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
“Jim was not just a member; he was a mentor, a friend, and a proud dad. His dedication, passion and commitment to the industry has left an indelible mark. As we mourn the loss of Jim, let us also celebrate his life.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. We are in contact with the family and we will advise the industry of memorial service arrangements once known. Obviously, at this incredibly sad time, we wish to respect the family’s privacy and wishes.
“We will honour Jim’s memory by continuing to work with the family to assist in any way we can. Jim was a larger-than-life character in our industry who will be sorely missed.
“Vale Jim Hill.”
