Industry invited to shape national standards for ZEBs

Industry input is now sought on national zero-emission bus standards, with feedback open on key technical specifications

Australia’s public transport sector is taking a significant step toward a cleaner future, with industry stakeholders now invited to provide input on national technical specifications for zero-emission buses.

The recently formed National ZEB Harmonisation Working Group, a collaboration between state and territory public transport bodies, is spearheading efforts to create harmonised high-level specifications for ZEBs across the country.

While all states and territories are involved, the initiative is being led by Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

The goal is to align technical standards nationally, simplifying procurement and manufacturing processes while giving industry clearer direction, “something industry has been calling on for some time”.

To ensure the specifications reflect practical realities on the ground, suppliers and operators are being asked to review and provide high-level feedback on 19 key technical areas.

The consultation process is being facilitated through the Bus Industry Confederation (BIC), which is helping coordinate industry responses.

Feedback is being collected via a short survey embedded in a Word document. Participants are asked to review the 19 technical specifications and provide comments in the designated column. The survey is estimated to take just 10 to 15 minutes to complete, with all submissions strictly confidential and anonymous.

Submissions are due by Monday, June 30 2025, and only one submission is accepted per person. Industry members are encouraged to share the survey with relevant colleagues within their organisation to ensure all key voices are heard.

The feedback is important and will be used by the National ZEB Harmonisation Working Group as the basis for its recommendation towards a national technical guideline (for the consideration of the Infrastructure and Transport Senior Official’s Committee (ITSOC) in 2025).

You can access the Word document here and once finalised, please pass on to Dean Moule at BIC.
