Hundreds of Canberra bus drivers to attend bargaining agreement meeting

The TWU is calling all Transport Canberra bus drivers to attend the meeting on Thursday to ensure for a fair EBA

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) has revealed that hundreds of bus drivers across Canberra are expected to attend a TWU all-driver meeting to vote on their upcoming enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) with Transport Canberra on Thursday.

Following 12 months of negotiations, the drivers will be off of the road from 10AM and back to work by 2PM after attending the meeting at the Quokka Pavilion on Thursday.

TWU NSW State Secretary Richard Olsen highlighted the importance of these meetings.

“Bus drivers provide an essential service to our community. With the aim of building a stronger, more sustainable transport industry, these meetings are integral to ensuring that these drivers are consulted on the issues which impact them most,” Olsen says.

“Of course, any interruptions to these services can cause major disruption, but we have seen companies time and time again say they can’t afford to pay drivers fair wages or provide safe conditions. This meeting is a huge step to guaranteeing a fair and reasonable deal for the bus drivers across the ACT.”

Transport Workers Union NSW’s ACT Sub-Branch Secretary Klaus Pinkas recognises the driver’s strength in ensuring fair and safe pay and conditions within the upcoming agreement.

“These drivers have continued to stay strong throughout these ongoing negotiations with Transport Canberra, which have now been ongoing for about twelve months,” Pinkas says.

“This work is front-facing and essential to the Canberra community. The pressures which bus drivers are put under within the transport industry are immense, so ensuring that these drivers are afforded a fair rate of pay and safe conditions is not optional.”
