The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) has announced the appointment of a new secretary of its Tasmanian branch.
From November 9, Mark Dunsby will take over Byron Cubit in the role after the latter’s resignation.
Dunsby brings more than 14 years of experience to the role after serving as a Springfield bus driver, claiming to have driven every route in Hobart after spending more than a decade behind the wheel.
Having also served as a delegate and former branch president, Dunsby says he has seen firsthand the daily pressures of the job, from fatigue and job uncertainty to outright abuse, fuelling his fight to protect workers.

“I know how hard our members work to keep our community moving. They are out every day, whether it’s rain, hail or shine, providing a critical service to Tasmanians. Every single one deserves to be treated with respect,” Dunsby says.
“This means more than just words – it means paying our transport workers better and providing practical solutions to keep them safe on the job at all times.
“I’ll make it my mission as Branch Secretary to make sure members get what they deserve.”
RTBU assistant national secretary Shayne Kummerfeld thanked outgoing branch secretary Bryon Cubit for his tireless commitment to improving the wages and conditions of rail and bus workers across Tasmania.
“Over the past two years we’ve witnessed a Liberal state government hell bent on cutting workers’ conditions, yet Byron stood shoulder to shoulder with members at every turn to make sure they were respected for the essential work they do,” Kummerfeld says.
“Through his leadership, Metro members secured a record 20.5 per cent pay increase and lasting improvements to conditions, such as critical incident leave.”
The Tasmanian branch executive appointed Dunsby to the role on November 5, with John Groves now assuming the role of branch president.
