Scania has delivered the first of three new generation low floor articulated buses to Victorian operator Grenda Transit Management.
The new Scania N Series, an N 310 UA6X2/2 was built by Volgren in Dandenong for Grenda and will commence operations shortly in the South-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Grenda operates a fleet of 27 articulated buses, primarily split between Scania chassis and Japanese-sourced Fujis dating from the mid-1980s.
The new Scania N Series has a low floor from front to back with no over-axle hump. The three-door body allows quick and easy access, and the interior has been fitted out in anticipation of the commencement of Myki card operations.
The very first of these new generation Scania low floor articulated buses was put into service late last year in New South Wales as part of the successful Metro Bus program, run by the NSW State government to trial high frequency services with pre-pay only ticketing.
The Scania N Series articulated buses are 18 metres long yet the articulation allows for a high degree of maneuverability, which is essential for coping with increasingly congested cities.
The buses can accommodate 96 passengers, with 53 adults seated.
While the first vehicle has been delivered to Grenda, the two further units are not far behind.
The Scania N Series entering service with Grenda are powered by Scania’s 9.0-litre, five-cylinder 310hp Euro 4 using Exhaust Gas Recirculation, which precludes the need for exhaust after-treatment additives.
The engine is mated to a six-speed ZF automatic gearbox with integrated retarder that provides ample braking power almost down to a standstill.
