Australia’s long-distance coach sector entered a fresh chapter on November 20, as FlixBus officially launched services across major interstate corridors.
While the bright green livery may be new to local travellers, Flix is a global mobility leader operating in 43 countries. The company has reshaped intercity travel by combining a strong international brand and technology platform with the operational expertise of established local transport partners.
The very first FlixBus service pulled out of Canberra station at 1am with more than 30 customers onboard.
Operator Deanes Coaches ran the first service from the Jolimont Centre in a “huge and exciting milestone” for the business.
“We are officially the first FlixBus service in Australia to operate (Canberra to Sydney),” Deanes Coaches says.
“A massive thank you to our team for their hard work in getting us here, and to our amazing partner Flixbus for partnering with us on this journey to deliver a fresh, convenient and reliable travel option for our region.”
A key distinction is that Flix does not own any buses. Its model relies entirely on contracting trusted operators who supply the fleet, drivers and day-to-day service delivery. Flix manages the brand, digital platform, booking engine and network design, while its partners deliver the on-road experience. It is an approach that has reshaped mobility across Europe and North America and now promises to influence the Australian long-distance market.
The scale of this model is most evident in the United States, where Flix acquired the iconic Greyhound Lines in 2021. Importantly, Greyhound USA and Greyhound Australia are separate, unrelated companies. The US acquisition enabled Flix to integrate a century-old network into its modern mobility ecosystem, still operated by contracted service partners.
In Australia, Flix has partnered with respected local operators. Deanes Coaches now operates the Sydney–Canberra corridor, providing a fresh and competitive travel option between the two capitals. The Donric Group is operating the Sydney–Melbourne service, applying its deep experience to one of the country’s most significant interstate routes.
A highlight of the launch has been Deanes Coaches’ introduction of a high-specification King Long coach supplied by Bus Stop Sales. Selected specifically for its passenger experience and value, the coach sets a new benchmark on the Canberra corridor. Travellers are welcomed by luxury leather seating over one metre wide (double), offering exceptional shoulder room, generous legroom and deep recline. The onboard experience is enhanced by fast Wi-Fi, integrated Flix entertainment streaming, USB charging at all seats, dimmable ambient lighting, a wheelchair lift and a well-appointed onboard toilet.

Engineering quality matches the comfort inside. King Long incorporates world-class European componentry, including ZF axles, advanced braking systems and front independent suspension, paired with an efficient 400-horsepower 11-litre engine. The result is a quiet, stable and refined ride that enhances driver confidence and long-distance passenger comfort. Importantly, the product is supported by Bus Stop Sales’ national sales, after-sales and parts network, ensuring strong whole-of-life performance for operators.
Irizar coaches are also used within the FlixBus network, demonstrating the flexibility of the Flix model, where each operator selects vehicles that best suit their service requirements while meeting consistent brand expectations.

For Bus Stop Sales, seeing King Long coaches operating under the FlixBus banner marks an important milestone. It reflects the confidence that leading Australian operators are placing in a product that combines European-grade engineering, passenger comfort, strong operational efficiency, and dependable national support.
“A sincere thank you to Deanes for your trust and confidence in King Long. Your support is a strong endorsement of the quality, reliability and long-distance capability that King Long continues to deliver in Australia,” Bus Stop Sales says.
“We look forward to supporting this fleet every kilometre of the way.”
With Flix partnering with skilled Australian operators and deploying modern, feature-rich vehicles, the interstate coach market is entering a more dynamic, competitive and customer-focused era – one that brings a new standard of comfort, reliability and choice for travellers nationwide.
Watching the first iconic-green FlixBus depart at 1am from Canberra’s Jolimont Centre, FlixBus Australia Senior Managing Director Yvan Lefranc-Morin says the milestone is emotional.
“There’s nothing quite as special as watching passengers’ step onboard that very first FlixBus departing in a new country,” he says.
“Today marks the culmination of a massive project for FlixBus that dozens of dedicated people have worked to achieve tirelessly for months so we are able to uphold the highest standards of quality, safety and passenger experience. But it is also the direct result of how welcoming Australians are and how well FlixBus aligns with their love for travel.
“This is only the beginning of FlixBus journey in Australia, marking a new era of sustainable, convenient and affordable intercity and interstate travel for Australians and for anyone visiting the country.”
