Ford targets school bus safety with passenger exit monitoring tech

Ford school bus safety technology moves forward with a new patent designed to monitor passengers exiting and alert nearby drivers

Ford is advancing its focus on school bus safety, with a newly published patent outlining a system designed to monitor passengers as they exit vehicles and warn surrounding traffic.

First reported by Ford Authority, the patent was filed on September 6, 2023 and published on April 14, 2026 under serial number 12,602,932.

The filing details a system that creates a “virtual zone” around a vehicle such as a school bus, using detection technology to track passengers as they disembark.

According to the patent documentation, the system can determine when a predefined condition is met and generate a virtual safety zone around the vehicle, before transmitting information to nearby vehicles.

This zone is designed to remain active while passengers move away from the vehicle, helping ensure surrounding drivers are aware of potential hazards during one of the highest-risk phases of bus operation.

In practical terms, this could allow nearby vehicles to receive alerts when a bus is loading or unloading passengers, and notify drivers when it is safe to proceed.

The patent diagrams show how the system integrates detection units, vehicle control systems and communication modules to monitor movement around the bus and coordinate responses across connected vehicles.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement.

“The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
