The federal government has announced it is conducting the first major reform to Australia’s public transport disability standards since they were introduced more than 20 years ago.
Following a long period of consultation, the federal government will reform disability standards to help make public transport more accessible.
The government says the new standards will improve accessibility and support independent travel for a range of users, meaning they can plan and undertake their journeys with a greater level of certainty.
People will be able to get information in accessible formats including timetables and updates about disruptions in a way that meets best practice design principles for accessibility.
The federal government says onboard next-stop information will need to be provided through signage and audio announcements.
Passenger safety when getting on board public transport has also been slated to improve with vertical edge barriers required for portable boarding ramps to allow those who use mobility aids or wheelchairs to get on board more safely.
The federal government says public transport staff will get to ensure staff understand their roles and responsibilities under the Transport Standards.
“The Transport Standards will be amended to reflect the new legal requirements for public transport operators and providers,” the federal government says.
“More information will be available to users and operators and providers of public transport in the lead up to the updated Transport Standards coming into effect.”
