Bus and coach deliveries were up almost 21 percent in May, compared with the same month of last year, according to new figures compiled by ABC.

Deliveries data received from major manufacturers – excluding Denning – show registrations reached 150 in the month, compared with 151 deliveries in April and 153 in March.

In the year to date, deliveries are up a whopping 53.74 percent on the same period of last year, with 718 vehicles delivered so far (versus 467 in 2008).

Driving the market higher were large deliveries to Brisbane City Council (21 MANs and eight Scanias), PTD in SA (17 Scanias), NSW State Transit (12 Mercedes-Benzs), CDC in NSW (8 Scanias) and Surfside on the Gold Coast (5 Volvos and 5 Bustechs).

Scania topped the deliveries list in May with 39 vehicles, followed by Mercedes-Benz (29), MAN (24), BCI (20), Bustech (14) and Volvo (14).

By body, Custom Coaches came out on top with 41 sales, just ahead of Volgren (39), BCI and Bustech (20 each).

Notably, 69 percent of deliveries were for route/city buses; while school buses accounted for 27 percent of deliveries, and charter and long distance 4 percent.
