The average price of diesel at the terminal gate has fallen 23.5 percent in the past three months, according to data collected by the Australian Institute of Petroleum (AIP).
The AIP data, based on information provided by BP Australia, Caltex, Shell Australia and ExxonMobil, shows the average terminal gate price nationally dropped from 152.4 cents a litre (c/l) in the week ended October 17, 2008, to 116.6 c/l in the week ended January 16, 2009, albeit up marginally on the average of 113.72 c/l in the week ended January 9, 2009.
In the same period, the average terminal gate price for unleaded petrol nationally fell from 145.4 c/l to 102 c/l, with the gap between diesel and petrol prices blowing out from 6.5 c/l to 14.1 c/l, although the differential has narrowed considerably in the past week as pricing pressure exerted from high industrial demand for diesel dissipates.
