The Victorian government has announced a $52 million investment in public transport as part of the 2025/26 Budget, announcing that more train services are heading across the Gippsland line.
Additional services on the Traralgon line are made possible by the Gippsland Line Upgrade which is nearing completion later this year.

The Gippsland Line Upgrade is set to deliver more frequent and reliable train services to the growing communities of Gippsland, with the project allowing for extra daily services between Traralgon and Melbourne.
Due to the upgrade works, along with Victoria’s Big Build works impacting the metropolitan section of the network, coaches will replace trains on the Traralgon and Bairnsdale lines for part or all of the journey.
Coaches are replacing trains on the Gippsland Line from Sunday 11 May to Wednesday 14 May, and again from Sunday 18 May to Wednesday 21 May, and finally from Friday 23 May to Wednesday 28 May.
These coaches are replacing trains on evening services from Southern Cross to Traralgon and Bairnsdale, and some services departing from Traralgon. Coaches will not stop at Flinders Street, Richmond, Clayton, or Berwick stations.
“The Gippsland Line Upgrade will deliver more services to Gippsland and ensure passengers can make the most of the upgraded Morwell and Traralgon stations,” member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing says.
“We thank passengers in Gippsland for their patience while we get on with this important work that will deliver more reliable services,” member for Eastern Victoria Tom McIntosh says.
