Busways mechanic wins BusNSW apprentice of the year

Port Macquarie mechanic Drew Miante has been named BusNSW Apprentice of the Year, recognised for skill, focus and determination

A Port Macquarie apprentice mechanic has been recognised for her skill and determination, with Busways’ Drew Miante named BusNSW’s Apprentice of the Year for 2025.

Now in the third year of a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, Miante has become a valued member of the Busways Port Macquarie depot. She supports senior mechanics on complex repairs, handles challenging diagnostics and has volunteered for advanced training opportunities, including complete engine rebuilds rarely carried out on the North Coast.

Her efforts ensure buses return to service quickly and safely, helping thousands of passengers reach their destinations every day.

“I’m proud to be part of a team that values me and invests in my growth,” Miante says.

“I have great mentors and teammates who always have my back, and I am excited to keep learning and take on bigger challenges.”

Busways regional asset manager Shane Golden says the award reflects Miante’s commitment as well as the supportive culture of the depot team.

“Drew’s determination and willingness to step up to every challenge have made her a standout apprentice,” Golden says.

He says the recognition is also a credit to the wider workforce at Port Macquarie.

“She is a part of an incredible team, where every single person works hard, backs each other, shares knowledge and celebrates effort. That’s what makes achievements like these possible,” Golden says.

The recognition continues a run of success for the depot. Last year, Port Macquarie driver Kath Curry received the BusNSW Driver of the Year award. Busways says these milestones highlight the camaraderie and strength of the workforce, where people are encouraged to grow, take pride in their work and support one another.

For Miante, the award is both a milestone and motivation. It represents the value of persistence, curiosity and a passion for learning, while also pointing to bigger challenges ahead.

Her journey highlights the opportunities available within the bus industry, where apprentices are supported in building practical knowledge and acquiring advanced skills. Busways says the recognition reflects not just individual achievement, but also the team-based culture that makes the Port Macquarie depot a strong contributor to the network.
