Construction on Light Rail Stage 2A is entering a key phase, with major works scheduled for November and December 2025 to install new tracks and connect the existing light rail line at the Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street intersection.
To allow crews safe access to the site, light rail services between Alinga Street and Sandford Street will pause over two weekends, from:
- Saturday November 22 t0 23
- Saturday December 6 to 7

During these closures, rail replacement buses operated by CDC Canberra will run between Alinga Street and Sandford Street in Mitchell, continuing to Well Station Drive.

A map provided by Transport Canberra shows replacement services stopping next to or near existing light rail stations, including:
- Alinga Street: City bus interchange, Platform 4
- Elouera Street, Ipima Street, Macarthur Avenue, Swinden Street, Phillip Avenue, Northbourne Avenue
- Dickson Interchange: Platform 2
- EPIC and Racecourse: EPIC main entry bus layover
- Sandford Street and Well Station Drive: Flemington Road
Passengers travelling south of Sandford Street are encouraged to transfer to a bus at Well Station Drive, where connections are most convenient.
Light rail services north of Mitchell, between Sandford Street and Gungahlin Place, will continue to operate on a 10-minute frequency instead of the usual 15-minute timetable. Passengers will not need to tap on or off when boarding replacement buses; however, regular MyWay tapping will still be required at operating light rail stops.
Additional minor works are also planned from 8pm on Friday, November 28, to 6am on Tuesday, December 2, though services will continue to run during this period.
Transport Canberra has advised passengers to allow extra travel time, check for bus diversions and platform changes, and use the Built for CBR and Transport Canberra websites for real-time updates. A further closure will be required in January 2026, with details to be confirmed closer to the date.
