Greyhound Australia currently has dozens of coaches doing
emergency evacuations across North Queensland but all scheduled services
between Cairns
and Rockhampton have ceased as of this morning.
Chief Executive Officer
Robert Thomas says many coaches are currently assisting Emergency Services
evacuate backpackers from Mission Beach and Airlie Beach as well as personnel
from mine sites around Mt Isa, Bowen Basin and as far west as Noccundra and
locals of affected areas.
“We are finding
backpackers in particular are confused by what is happening and we urge all of
them to take necessary precautions and follow the advice of hostel operators,”
Thomas says.
“Greyhound is taking
backpackers from Mission
Beach hostels to
evacuation centres currently.
“The strong advice for
backpackers if they are not sure where to go is seek refuge in an evacuation
centre immediately.”
Thomas says Greyhound had
extra services running all up and down the coast over the past two days.
“We have had nine coaches
operating as opposed to the usual four a day between Cairns and Rockhampton over the past two days
but as Cyclone Yasi draws closer, Greyhound has ceased these services as of
now,” he says.
“First thing Friday
morning we will assess whether it will be possible to recommence services.”
Greyhound is posting
regular service updates on its website.
