Sege Seats warns worn bus seats could pose hidden safety risks

Sege Seats safety guidance highlights how worn bus seats can become a risk, urging operators to improve inspections and maintenance practices

Bus seats may not fail dramatically, but gradual wear and fatigue can create serious safety risks if left unchecked, according to new guidance highlighting the importance of regular inspection and maintenance.

The advisory, developed with input from Sege Seats, outlines how issues such as loosening mounts, collapsing foam and structural fatigue can compromise passenger safety long before a seat is visibly “broken”.

For operators, the message is clear: what looks like minor wear can quickly escalate into a safety-critical defect.

“Bus seats don’t usually ‘fail’ in one dramatic moment,” the guidance notes.

“More often, a seat will slowly loosen, soften, crack or fatigue until it no longer supports passengers properly.”

This is particularly relevant across school, route and coach services, where seats are subjected to constant vibration, heavy use and varied passenger loads.

Sege Seats says safety should be assessed across three key areas: the seat cover and foam, the structural frame and the mounting points that secure the seat to the vehicle.

While cosmetic damage such as minor cracking or scuffing may not immediately impact safety, structural issues are a different matter.

“If a seat moves when it shouldn’t, has structural cracking, exposed sharp edges or compromised mounts, it’s no longer safe enough to leave in service,” the guidance states.

For bus operators, mounting integrity remains one of the most critical and commonly overlooked factors.

Movement at the base or backrest can indicate deeper issues such as loosened fasteners, fatigue cracking or deformation, all of which can worsen over time if not addressed.

Sege Seats emphasises that even small amounts of movement should be treated as an early warning sign rather than a minor inconvenience.

“If the seat or its mount has noticeable movement under load, treat it as a defect,” the guidance advises.

Beyond structural concerns, foam fatigue is another issue gaining attention.

Collapsed or uneven cushioning not only reduces comfort but can increase strain on passengers and drivers, particularly on longer routes or uneven road surfaces.

For drivers, seat condition also plays a direct role in safety outcomes. Fatigue linked to poor seating posture or inadequate support can reduce alertness and make it harder to identify emerging defects during daily operations.

Sege Seats highlights that driver comfort should be considered part of a broader safety framework, not just a workplace amenity.

Inspection practices are another key focus, with the guidance recommending a simple, repeatable approach that can be integrated into daily depot routines.

A basic “look, feel and move” check can identify early signs of wear, including torn upholstery, soft or uneven cushioning and movement at mounting points.

Operators are encouraged to build consistent inspection intervals, supported by clear reporting and documentation processes.

“Consistent inspection intervals, a clear ‘remove from service’ trigger list, and good record keeping are key to preventing small defects from becoming big ones.”

When defects are identified, the decision to monitor, repair or replace should be based on structural integrity rather than appearance.
