August bus deliveries unable to get into gear

Slow start to new financial year persists, exclusive ABC data reveals.

The Australian bus and coach market remained flat on the previous month, with 68 deliveries reported by manufacturers.

The numbers are struggling to lift in the new financial year, with 69 and 68 well down on the 114 reported in June.

Scania enjoyed a solid month-on-month rise in the chassis sector, up from 11 to 27 deliveries. This was underpinned by a 14-unit order from Ventura and another six from Transdev. Volvo fell back from 29 to 19, with Perth Transport Authorities providing eight of its deliveries, and Busways another six. Yutong was next best, just short of double digits.

Volgren led the body-building sector with 26 deliveries, a jump of 10 on July. No other bodybuilder reached double figures here, though Yutong was next best on nine. A long tail followed, with 14 names on six deliveries and under sharing the remaining 33 units.

In the air-conditioning sector, Thermo King saw a slight dip on its 50 last month, settling for 39 in August. It still occupied more than half the market, with Cling-Yutong following on nine and Denso on eight.

Only four jurisdictions were involved in August deliveries. Victoria was the busiest, with 41 per cent of deliveries recorded there. NSW followed with a quarter, WA on 21 per cent, and Queensland 13 per cent.
