New decade starts with bus deliveries flurry

Huge bus and coach numbers usher in 2020, exclusive ABC data reveals.

Australian bus and coach deliveries started the new decade with a bang, resulting in one of the biggest months in modern times for the local industry – a final number of 172 in January.

While local and global events may yet prove this a fleeting feat, it’s still worth crunching the numbers, which represent a huge year-on-year increase on last January’s 108, and already surpasses 2019’s peak of 153 in July – which at the time had already broken the previous year’s record.

Swedes Volvo (52) and Scania (38) were the frontrunners again, but it was the chasing duo in BCI and Yutong that proved stiff competition, posting 28 and 21, respectively.

The body building sector was also hotly contested, with Volgren (33) retaining top spot, but not by much with BCI hot on its heels on 30. Yutong (21) and Irizar (18) followed, with at least 13 more builders recorded in a crowded market.

While Thermo King’s (57) dominance in the air-conditioning sector persists, the chasing pack also had a busy month. Spheros (28) claimed second, with Yutong/Cling (21), Hispacold (20) and MCC (18) not far behind.

Victoria (28 per cent) and NSW (26 per cent) – an almost even split – accounted for more than half the market. WA surpassed Queensland for third place, with Tasmania, ACT and SA sharing the rest of the numbers.
