New benchmark FOR 2018

Spring is upon us with a bright outlook for the local industry as manufacturers’ deliveries hit another high for 2018, exclusive ABC data reveals

New benchmark FOR 2018
A top yearly haul of 122 was recorded in August.

Not long since reaching a yearly high of 120 in June, the Australian bus and coach industry has bettered that figure, surpassing it by two to record 122 deliveries in August. A traditionally busy month, it beats the tally of 110 at the same time last year.

The market was dominated by the Swedish chassis manufacturers, with Volvo (55) and Scania (47) accounting for 84 per cent – much of that driven by government purchases. Scania shone in particular, smashing its previous best monthly tally of 30.

Volgren’s relationship with the Swedes bore fruit, its bodies listed on 53 vehicles all up for both. Bustech, despite not building its own chassis for the month, was kept busy with 21 bus body orders, also a yearly best. Thirteen more builders shared the remainder of the market.

Thermo King again sat atop the air-conditioning market with 44 units, this time followed closely by an undisclosed company on 34. Spheros and Hispacold also enjoyed a busy month, recorded in double-figure tallies.

NSW’s activity in the industry was unmatched, occupying more than 50 per cent. Victoria (9 per cent) continues to cool, well behind Queensland (17 per cent) for the month and closely trailed by SA and WA (8 and 7 per cent), respectively.
