The $125 million Westfields Belconnen redevelopment in Canberra was officially opened this week by ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope, with Westfield Group managing director Steven Lowy and local supermodel Anneliese Seubert.

“This significant redevelopment of Westfield Belconnen is the result of a partnership between the ACT Government and Westfield to create a premier retail hub for Canberra,” Stanhope says.

The ACT Government has invested $24.4 million upgrading the road network around Belconnen Town Centre, including improved road and pedestrian connections between Emu Bank and Lathlain Street.

The investment has also provided for two new bus interchanges at the Belconnen Community Station and at the Bus Interchange Lounge.

“The centre provides new levels of service for bus commuters, particularly for those accessing the shopping centre,” says Stanhope.

“The new bus interchanges promote safe and easy access for pedestrians.”

Stanhope says the ACT Government’s work with Westfield has led to a more integrated town centre, linking people from their homes to the centre, to their community facilities and to their workplaces.

He says other recent developments in Belconnen had seen the addition of 400 apartments on Benjamin Way and the new Arts Centre.

The ACT Government is also consulting on the $51.3 million Belconnen Enhanced Community Health Centre which will replace the existing Community Health Centre and will be more centrally located at the intersection of Lathlain Street and Cohen Street, near the new bus interchange.

Construction on the centres is expected to begin in the second half of this year.

“This massive investment by Westfield and the ACT Government in Belconnen town centre is a clear vote of confidence in this region of the Canberra and the Territory’s economy more broadly,” Stanhope says.

As part of the opening celebration Westfield Belconnen has organised four days of free activities, including live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, taste testing and fashion shows.
